His seminar attracted college and high school instructors around the nation who specialize in truck, auto and collision repair.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson explained that instructors should take the opportunity to teach students about the business aspect of shop management \u2013 in addition to standard technical training \u2013 because the training will benefit both the shop and the technician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tech will get a greater understanding of the whole process of receiving a vehicle for repair, diagnosing the problem, fixing it, and delivering the vehicle back to a satisfied customer on time,\u201d Johnson said, \u201cand the shop benefits from return customers and technicians that are fully engaged with their business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that shop management tools can help technicians \u201ctell the story\u201d about a vehicle\u2019s visit to a shop, including documenting the actual repair, the steps taken to diagnose the root cause, work that was performed, and whether or not the repair resolved the customer issue.\u00a0 The software also helps technicians accurately measure and improve their own efficiencies \u2013 and at the same time, provides the shop with a full history for every customer and vehicle to help build a successful business.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also encouraged instructors to \u201ctreat their training centers like a shop,\u201d and illustrated each step of the process using Mitchell 1\u2019s Manager SE software.\u00a0 Some suggestions in Johnson\u2019s presentation include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce modules within the training program on building a business plan. Trainees can \u201cwork the plan\u201d as part of the curriculum and evaluate success \u2013 performing the front-shop duties as well as the back-shop technical work \u2013 working each job as a shop would.<\/li>\n<li>Use the shop management system to measure the trainees\u2019 productivity as they advance through each step of the repair.
